The Federico Prades Award for Young Economists, granted by the AEB Foundation and the Spanish Banking Association, has been awarded in its fourth edition to Bruno Pellegrino for his study ‘Barriers to Capital Movements’.
The award in memory of the former Chief Economist of the AEB for thirty years, endowed by the AEB Foundation with €20,000, will be presented in the first quarter of 2025 by the President of the AEB and its foundation, Alejandra Kindelán.
In his work, Pellegrino maintains the thesis that, in the current global context of increasing protectionism, removing barriers to capital could increase global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 7% and significantly reduce existing economic and social welfare gaps between countries. Furthermore, he emphasizes the need to promote policies that integrate capital markets and harmonize international taxation to optimize the distribution of global capital and foster more equitable development.
A total of 23 papers were submitted for the award, all of high quality, according to the jury’s assessment, which was composed of Ana Isabel Fernández (CUNEF), Ángel Gavilán (Bank of Spain), Antonio Merino (Repsol), Jorge Sicilia (BBVA), Manuel Balmaseda (IEBF), Oscar Arce (ECB), Sofia Rodríguez Rico (Banco Sabadell), Verónica Frisancho (CAF), and Gonzalo Solana (University of Nebrija), who also chaired the jury.
With this award, the AEB supports young economists to research and present ideas that stimulate debate and the search for solutions to the challenges facing the financial system, just as Federico Prades did throughout his professional career.
