The banking sector presents regulatory simplification proposals in Frankfurt to boost EU growth
The Spanish Banking Association (AEB) and CECA today held a meeting in Frankfurt, ‘Strengths of the Spanish Banking Sector in times of global transition’, presenting proposals for regulatory simplification of the banking sector aimed at strengthening economic growth and the competitiveness of the European Union.
María Abascal, new Chair of the Executive Committee of the European Banking Federation
María Abascal, Director General of the Spanish Banking Association (AEB), has been appointed Chair of the Executive Committee of the European Banking Federation (EBF) for a two-year term starting January 1, 2025.
The banking sector has continued to make progress in 2023 to strengthen financial inclusion and its social commitment.
AEB, CECA, and Unacc held a meeting with the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Enterprise where the notable progress made by the banking sector in its social commitment was confirmed, improving the financial education of society and promoting the financial inclusion of the elderly and those in rural areas. Additionally, the Ministry has proposed deepening the support offered to mortgage debtors facing difficult situations.
The banking sector engages in dialogue with various social stakeholders on sustainability, digitalization, and financial education.
The banking associations AEB, CECA, and Unacc, in collaboration with the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and with the support of Abanca, organized the event “Dialogues with the banking sector for economic and social progress,” as part of the international and Latin American meetings being held in Santiago de Compostela.
AEB, CECA and Unacc awarded for ‘Aula Financiera y Digital’ and their commitment to financial education
The Spanish Banking Association (AEB), CECA and the National Union of Credit Cooperatives (Unacc) have received the “Finanzas Para Todos” award for best trajectory in the development of the Financial Education Plan for the ‘Aula Financiera y Digital’ initiative. This award, granted by the Bank of Spain, the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, is a recognition of the Spanish banking sector’s commitment to the financial and digital education of society.
María Abascal, new Managing Director of the AEB
From her new position, María Abascal will continue to be responsible for Public Policy, an area that encompasses all activities related to Banking, Regulation, Operations, Payment Methods, and Digitalization. She also takes on the coordination of sectoral initiatives and the Sustainability area. This brings together the prudential, digital, and sustainability vision with that of the social contribution of banking, particularly through the development of the Strategic Protocol to Strengthen the Social and Sustainable Commitment of the sector.

The Spanish Banking Association has appointed María Abascal as the new Public Policy Director, a division that encompasses all activities related to Banking, Regulation, Operations, Payment Systems, and Digitalization. She will also be a member of the Executive Committee of the European Banking Federation (EBF).
