77% of Spanish internet users aged 16 to 74 use the internet as a shopping channel, around 26 million people, according to IAB Spain. More than half of people between 60 and 74 years old combine online and in-store shopping.
It is undeniable that technology, and especially digitalization, is positive for society. It is also true that each person must adopt it at their own pace, always having alternatives when making their decisions. “The technological development of services must serve to improve people’s lives regardless of their age.” This is one of the conclusions of the ‘Digitalization and Seniors’ dialogue panel held last November by the Spanish Institute of Banking and Finance.
It is important that we all work together to bring the benefits of digitalization to all groups. An example in Spain is the ‘Impulse Committee’, composed of national organizations particularly interested and involved in promoting the development and proper use of the Internet and New Technologies. Associations such as AEB, as well as professional associations, federations, trade unions, political parties, universities, centres and confederations, make up the Steering Committee.
Digitalization is a factor of inclusion, in addition to being fundamental for driving economic development. Banks are making intense and constant efforts to adapt to changes in customer habits and the environment. The speed of society’s shift towards digitalization can be dizzying, which led banks two years ago to approve the Strategic Protocol to Reinforce the Social and Sustainable Commitment of Banking. This is a roadmap of solutions to ensure full financial inclusion.
