Society is evolving by leaps and bounds towards a new world dominated by technology. Digitalisation, understood as the penetration of the internet into our lives, is a fundamental part of this process. It is so because it shapes how we act and even how we think. As a society, we are facing the greatest innovation process in our recent history. Few people are still unaware of it, and likewise few sceptics fail to appreciate the enormous benefits brought by the digital revolution. No one should be left behind in this process.
“On the internet you can do and find virtually anything…”; this is a recurring phrase when describing the importance of digitalisation in our day-to-day lives. Making purchases, consulting and accessing private and public services, searching for information and, especially, communicating. New generations value new technologies for their agility, efficiency, ease and simplicity. However, the current process of rapid digitalisation carries the risk that many people, especially older people, may not be able to keep pace with the transformation they are experiencing, particularly in rural areas.
That is why banks have launched an initiative together with the Cibervoluntarios Foundation, with the aim of enabling our older people to benefit from all the advantages that digitalisation offers to improve their quality of life. It is never too late to learn to manage better in the digital era. The workshops we are running in small municipalities in rural areas across Spain (Expertclick) are filled with people eager to embrace new technologies, starting with the most basic step: overcoming fear of the internet. Once they become familiar with the apps that interest them most, it is only a matter of time before they make the most of digitalisation.
Depopulation in rural areas is a worrying phenomenon, exacerbated by the progressive ageing they are experiencing, which may affect the services received by those who remain. Banks are committed to offering digital channels and other types of solutions in these areas to serve their customers. Each institution uses its own solutions, but all are aware that this effort must continue and that digital banking is a good way to deliver financial services to everyone. The authorities must support us in this project by providing a good internet connection to every corner of Spain and making it easier for training to reach all citizens.
This digital transformation process brings nothing but benefits for banking customers. This may explain the exponential growth in digital customers. Consumers can access a wider range of higher-quality products and services, compare offers between institutions, with up-to-date information and at lower costs. All of this takes place in an environment of enhanced security provided by banks. Cybersecurity is a priority for everyone in this new digital environment that has become part of our lives.
