How to Recognize the Fake Technical Support Provider Scam
- A cybercriminal calls you posing as a technical support provider, claiming there is a problem with your computer’s software.
- The caller ID displays a phone number from a trusted provider.
- The cybercriminal tells you to act quickly or you will lose all your data.
- They then recommend you download a program that will fix the problem.
- The downloaded program allows them to access your computer’s data.
- Subsequently, they request that you make a small payment for the service provided, for which you will need to log in to your online banking.
- If you do so, the cybercriminal now has access to your bank account and can begin conducting fraudulent transactions.
