Alejandra Kindelán, president of the Spanish Banking Association (AEB), today welcomed the message from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding the need to take measures to strengthen the role of the banking sector in European economic growth and competitiveness.
The president of the AEB emphasized that her speech before the European Parliament serves as a boost to “the competitiveness agenda—an opportunity that must not be missed to make progress on simplifying banking regulation and supervision and on European integration.”
For Kindelán, it is essential that Europe take steps to enhance the banking sector’s ability to support growth—and not just to ensure financial stability.
“His words are in line with the sector’s proposals to boost financing capacity and risk appetite and to facilitate the investments needed to tackle Europe’s major economic, technological, and geopolitical challenges,” he emphasized.
The president of the AEB has emphasized the importance of creating the necessary conditions to develop capital markets and channel European savings toward productive investment, in line with Von der Leyen’s remarks. To reduce fragmentation in the financial system, the Spanish banking sector advocates promoting the Savings and Investment Union (SIU) and the implementation of a European Deposit Insurance Scheme (EDIS) as key elements for strengthening European financial integration and enhancing its growth potential.
