What lessons can we draw from the difficult years the banking sector has experienced since the onset of the financial crisis that originated in the United States? Our President, José María Roldán, focused his speech on this topic at the GARP 18th Risk Management Convention.
The regulation that emerged following the crisis has focused on seeking guarantees for financial stability, creating an extremely extensive and complex regulatory framework. However, it will not be possible to completely eliminate all risks in the financial sector without eliminating it as well, Roldán argued. “Let us beware of the stability of the graveyard,” he illustrated.
He also emphasized the need for regulatory and supervisory authorities to take into account the risks that may arise from those financial operators that have remained outside the regulatory framework but participate in the market—those that make up what is known as the shadow banking sector.
