{"id":38576,"date":"2020-09-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/actualidad\/notas-de-prensa\/spanish-banks-strengthen-their-position-in-the-face-of-covid-19-with-provisions-and-write-downs-of-e26-518-billion-and-record-losses-of-e11-531-billion-through-june\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T09:39:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T07:39:35","slug":"spanish-banks-strengthen-their-position-in-the-face-of-covid-19-with-provisions-and-write-downs-of-e26-518-billion-and-record-losses-of-e11-531-billion-through-june","status":"publish","type":"notas-de-prensa","link":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/en\/actualidad\/notas-de-prensa\/spanish-banks-strengthen-their-position-in-the-face-of-covid-19-with-provisions-and-write-downs-of-e26-518-billion-and-record-losses-of-e11-531-billion-through-june\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish banks strengthen their position in the face of COVID-19 with provisions and write-downs of \u20ac26.518 billion and record losses of \u20ac11.531 billion through June"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>Customer lending increases 2.5% and reaches a record \u20ac1.6 trillion<\/li>\n<li>The CET1 <em>fully loaded<\/em> ratio increases 30 basis points to 11.7%<\/li>\n<li>Non-performing loans decrease to 3.6% and coverage rises to 74%<\/li>\n<li>Provisions and write-downs amount to \u20ac17 billion more than a year earlier<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CONSOLIDATED INCOME STATEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spanish banks made a provision and write-down effort of \u20ac26.518 billion in the first half of 2020 to anticipate the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in a negative attributable profit of \u20ac11.531 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Gross income, which represents total revenue, decreased 5.9% in this period due primarily to a reduction in net interest income and, to a lesser extent, net fee and commission income, despite higher results from financial operations.<\/p>\n<p>Operating expenses decreased 7.3% through June year-on-year, bringing the efficiency ratio to 48.8%, an improvement of 70 basis points compared to the first half of the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>The combined effect of reduced gross income and lower operating expenses places net income, a measure that does not include provisions, above \u20ac20 billion in the first six months of the year, 4.5% lower than in June 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The high volume of provisions and write-downs of intangible assets made to strengthen the position against COVID-19, totaling \u20ac17 billion more than in the previous year, account for the negative result for the half-year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONSOLIDATED BALANCE SHEET<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The consolidated balance sheet exceeded \u20ac2.75 trillion for the first time as of June 30, 2020, representing year-on-year growth of 5.3% and reflecting the increase in loan and deposit balances to record levels.<\/p>\n<p>Customer lending increased 2.5% to reach \u20ac1.6 trillion, while customer deposits increased 4.8% and exceeded \u20ac1.5 trillion. Thus, the loan-to-deposit ratio decreased 2 percentage points to 106%. <\/p>\n<p>The non-performing loan ratio decreased to 3.6%, compared to 3.9% a year earlier.
