High school students from across Europe participated in the final of the European Money Quiz (EMQ) competition, which for the first time was held remotely on June 16 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mateo Gonz\u00e1lez Villar, a Spanish student from Colegio Mirabal in Madrid, was the winner of the competition, followed by students from North Macedonia and the Czech Republic. <\/p>\n
The participants in this ‘grand final’ had previously won national financial education competitions held in a total of 22 European countries, despite the school closures decreed to address the health crisis.<\/p>\n
This year, instead of the usual in-person competition in Brussels, an interactive online event was held, combining a Zoom video conference attended by 29 national winners with a live YouTube broadcast that brought together students, teachers, and initiative coordinators.<\/p>\n
Contestants tested their personal finance knowledge through a simultaneous game on the online platform ‘Kahoot,’ which focused on four main themes: money and transactions; financial planning and management; risk and reward; and the current financial context.<\/p>\n
The educational content of the competition aligns with OECD guidelines and the core financial competencies and knowledge required for young people to make informed financial decisions. Launched in 2017, the European Money Quiz (EMQ), organised by the European Banking Federation (EBF), is Europe\u2019s most widely recognised financial skills competition, promoting financial education through national banking associations in Europe, including AEB.<\/p>\n
