{"id":37908,"date":"2021-07-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-06T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/actualidad\/notas-de-prensa\/banking-key-to-the-modernization-of-the-spanish-productive-sector\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T12:38:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T10:38:01","slug":"banking-key-to-the-modernization-of-the-spanish-productive-sector","status":"publish","type":"notas-de-prensa","link":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/en\/actualidad\/notas-de-prensa\/banking-key-to-the-modernization-of-the-spanish-productive-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Banking, Key to the Modernization of the Spanish Productive Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>An event organized by CECA and AEB took place in Madrid today, bringing together more than 120 people in a combined physical and virtual format, with the objective of analyzing the role of the banking sector in the Spain Can recovery plan and in the current international context<\/li>\n<li>The meeting, one more corporate event organized by both associations with the objective of creating forums for debate and spaces for reflection and dissemination to improve the banking sector and its contribution to society, featured the participation of Carlos Bastarreche<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Carlos Bastarreche is an external advisor to both associations on European affairs and to promote banking collaboration in the Spain Can plan, key to the modernization of the Spanish productive sector.<\/p>\n<p>Bastarreche is a Spanish diplomat with extensive European experience since 1979. Between 2002 and 2010 he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Spain to the European Union. He has also been Ambassador of Spain to France and the United Kingdom.  <\/p>\n<p>The meeting began with a presentation by Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda M\u00e9ndez, Director General of CECA, who highlighted &#8220;the key role that the banking sector has played in mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 crisis by channeling monetary policy and public initiatives to boost the real economy while maintaining the provision of liquidity to companies and households. Measures such as moratoria (legal and sectoral) that have benefited almost 1.5 million people, advances on pensions and SEPE benefits, or financing to more than 1 million companies linked to ICO guarantee lines, among others, demonstrate the effective contribution made by banking in recent months&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The entities associated with CECA and AEB wish to adopt an equally active role in the implementation of the National Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. In this regard, the role of banking can be fundamental as a channel for European funds. <\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Rold\u00e1n, President of AEB, considers that &#8220;the execution of the NextGeneration European aid program represents an unprecedented challenge for the Spanish economy. In this context, the distribution capacity that banks have through their networks, as well as their experience in analyzing projects and evaluating risks, can become a highly useful instrument for delivering these funds to those who can best contribute to this great project of transforming the Spanish economy. Our institutions demonstrated with the ICO-guaranteed credit program that public-private collaboration has great potential and can work very well, and now they are once again placing their resources and capabilities at the disposal of the Next Generation program&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, the President of AEB emphasized that &#8220;one of the great challenges posed by channeling European funds is reaching SMEs, which constitute 90% of the Spanish economy and are the major job creators in our country. The economy must be modernized&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Carlos Bastarreche highlighted that Europe has withstood recent crises and has advanced in the Banking Union, and the lessons we have learned from the pandemic will be formalized in progress toward integration. In this way, the NextGenerationEU funds are the beginning of a real fiscal budgetary capacity for the European and Monetary Union. The EU&#8217;s response has been very positive.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Spain&#8217;s credibility is at stake in the distribution of European funds; it is essential to do things right and it is not easy, but we can do it. The economy must be modernized, with digitalization and energy transformation.
