{"id":35293,"date":"2021-10-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-28T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/compromiso\/ciberconsejos\/sim-swapping-the-mobile-phone-scam\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T16:23:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T14:23:02","slug":"sim-swapping-the-mobile-phone-scam","status":"publish","type":"ciberconsejos","link":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/en\/compromiso\/ciberconsejos\/sim-swapping-the-mobile-phone-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"SIM swapping: the mobile phone scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SIM swapping occurs when a scammer, using social engineering techniques and your stolen personal data, takes control of your mobile phone\u2019s SIM card.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A scammer obtains the victim\u2019s personal data through, for example, data breaches, phishing, social media searches, malicious apps, online purchases, <em>malware<\/em>, etc.<\/li>\n<li>With this information, the scammer tricks a mobile network operator into transferring the victim\u2019s mobile number to a SIM card the scammer already has.<\/li>\n<li>The scammer can now receive calls and text messages, including the SMS codes used to access the victim\u2019s online banking.<\/li>\n<li>The victim will notice that their phone has lost service and that they cannot log in to their bank account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What Can You Do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Keep your software up to date, including your browser, antivirus and operating system.<\/li>\n<li>Limit the information you share and be cautious on social media.<\/li>\n<li>Never open suspicious links received via email or SMS.<\/li>\n<li>Do not reply to suspicious emails or engage by phone with people who call to request your personal information.<\/li>\n<li>Update your passwords regularly.<\/li>\n<li>Download only official apps and always review permissions.<\/li>\n<li>Where possible, avoid linking your phone number to online accounts that could be sensitive.<\/li>\n<li>Set up your PIN to restrict access to the SIM card.
