The health crisis caused by the coronavirus has opened a window of opportunity “to review the current regulatory approach to the banking sector, to make regulations simpler and more effective.”<\/p>\n
This was stated by our President, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Rold\u00e1n, in his speech at the IIF Conference held via videoconference to address regulators’ response to the current pandemic affecting the entire planet.<\/p>\n
“The response from central banks, supervisors and regulators, and even from countries and the EU to the pandemic has been swift. This is significant and will make a difference in the future,” Rold\u00e1n stated in his speech.<\/p>\n
The AEB President emphasized that, in this difficult context, banks are guaranteeing the provision of credit and “have a very important role to play in the European economy,” which is based on SMEs. In this regard, he considered that to maintain their function with maximum effectiveness, the banking sector requires “stability in the measures adopted by regulators” in the future. <\/p>\n
He also highlighted that “the digitalization of banks has enabled them to remain fully operational since the beginning of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, with no problems of any kind recorded either in Spain or in Europe.”<\/p>\n
