{"id":38196,"date":"2023-03-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/actualidad\/te-interesa\/aeb-informa\/spain-is-very-well-prepared-to-weather-turbulence-in-international-markets\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T09:56:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T07:56:52","slug":"spain-is-very-well-prepared-to-weather-turbulence-in-international-markets","status":"publish","type":"blog-aeb","link":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/en\/actualidad\/te-interesa\/aeb-informa\/spain-is-very-well-prepared-to-weather-turbulence-in-international-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cSpain is very well prepared to weather turbulence in international markets\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mar\u00eda Abascal, Managing Director of AEB, highlighted today the strength of the Spanish banking sector in the current international financial market environment, marked by the collapse of the US banks Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, and by UBS\u2019s acquisition of Credit Suisse.<\/p>\n<p>At the opening of the Banking Lab session on \u2018Opportunities and risks in the non-bank financial sector\u2019, Abascal outlined the strengths of Spanish banking, which place it in a good position to weather turbulence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A geographically diversified commercial banking business model, with more than 40% of earnings generated outside Spain<\/li>\n<li>Proven capability in managing banking risks<\/li>\n<li>A simple, balanced and diversified balance-sheet structure, with customer deposits accounting for a higher share than the EU average (54%)<\/li>\n<li>Solvency and capital strength, with a top-quality capital (CET1) ratio of 12.3%, above the minimums required by regulation and the supervisor<\/li>\n<li>Non-performing loans at their lowest level since the 2008 financial crisis (3.45% in Spain)<\/li>\n<li>Recurring results with profitability (ROE) above the European average: 10.6%<\/li>\n<li>High efficiency: 47% in Spain<\/li>\n<li>A comfortable liquidity position, well above requirements: LCF and NSFR ratios (at 192% and 131%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe have strong, diversified, solid institutions that have been able to navigate an extraordinary decade of negative and zero interest rates and that now, as monetary policy returns to normal, are being strengthened by their results to meet the economic and social challenges ahead,\u201d Mar\u00eda Abascal stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding what is known as \u2018shadow banking\u2019, she explained that these activities are not a problem per se, as they complement banks\u2019 intermediation role, but that excessive growth in these activities could affect financial stability.
