Today it is clear that when, at this time last year and in this same newspaper, I stated that 2007 would go on to occupy a prominent place in the future annals of financial history, I did not anticipate what the rest of 2008 would bring.<\/p>\n

It is true that the onset of the financial crisis more than twenty months ago, and the subsequent closure of money and capital markets, were of an intensity and breadth rarely experienced up to that point.<\/p>\n
