In Western societies, including Spain, demographics present unfavorable profiles for the economy due to the population’s tendency to decline and age. These facts are generating growing concern about issues such as pension and healthcare payments, the reduction of the labor force, and stagnant economic growth. <\/p>\n

New Scenario<\/p>\n

We are still in time to reverse the negative aspects of demographic trends or, at least, mitigate them<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For this reason, the Spanish Banking Association (AEB), aware that demographic change is one of the major issues of our time, commissioned the Demographic Renaissance Foundation to conduct a study offering a comprehensive view of Spain’s demographic evolution and its implications.<\/p>\n

The study highlights demographic impacts that are far from encouraging for all economic agents, and the banking sector is no exception. However, not all of them are negative, particularly in the short term, nor in all geographic markets. <\/p>\n

In any case, it is necessary to become aware of these effects, as only then can we adopt policies that allow us to better leverage the positive impacts and mitigate the negative ones. With this objective, the Government of Spain created a Commissioner for the Demographic Challenge in January 2017. <\/p>\n
