{"id":35806,"date":"2016-12-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-04T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/actualidad\/te-interesa\/aeb-informa\/experts-are-betting-on-a-status-quo-budget\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T09:53:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T07:53:26","slug":"experts-are-betting-on-a-status-quo-budget","status":"publish","type":"blog-aeb","link":"https:\/\/aebanca.es\/en\/actualidad\/te-interesa\/aeb-informa\/experts-are-betting-on-a-status-quo-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts are betting on a status-quo Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">The experts gathered at El Nuevo Lunes breakfasts believe that the broad outlines of the Budget will follow the same line as the policies implemented by Mariano Rajoy\u2019s previous government, and that it will aim to freeze spending and reduce the deficit by raising excise duties and corporate tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In this regard, Juan Pedro Mar\u00edn Arrese, an economic analyst and professor at the IEB (UCM), believes that the Budget is more unpredictable than in other years, insofar as there is a larger and stronger majority opposition in Parliament that will make decision-making more difficult. \u201cAs in all these recent years, especially since serious budget adjustments began, the scope for creativity in the country\u2019s public accounts is increasingly narrow. At present, virtually none. Previously there were spending items that could be cut because they were discretionary spending, but today that chapter has been exhausted. In this sense, the margin is very narrow and the only possibility to cover the \u20ac5,000 million hole, or whatever the deviation may be, is to increase revenues.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At this point he refers to the government\u2019s announcement of tax increases. \u201cIt is also true that raising excise duties is a controversial measure. But even more controversial is corporate tax.
