46% of the Spanish population considers their financial knowledge to be “low” or “very low,” according to the Financial Competencies Survey by the Bank of Spain (BdE) and the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). Why is managing basic finances so difficult? What can be done to prepare everyone, young and old, or so that consumers can make better decisions in their daily lives? The answer to these questions is very clear: it is necessary to strengthen financial knowledge. <\/p>\n

In the banking sector, we are convinced that financial education and digital training are two very powerful tools for improving our quality of life.<\/p>\n

Financial education is a good traveling companion, both for providing peace of mind in the administration of assets and for preparing us in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise so they do not cause irreparable harm.<\/p>\n

At all stages of life, it is necessary to know how to manage available resources and to be aware, from an early age, that they are limited, and that it is essential to be realistic to avoid making errors in calculation and assessment.<\/p>\n

There are widely held financial principles such as, for example, “it is advisable to save to face future complications,” “it is bad to live beyond our means,” or “it is not reasonable to be heavily indebted.” We are all sensitive to these principles and, despite this, at some point in our lives we may come to violate them. One of the most reputable investors, Warren Buffett, maintains that he does not invest in things he does not understand, and that is precisely the root of financial education: that each person is capable of understanding the why and the wherefore of the economic and financial decisions they adopt. <\/p>\n

The importance of financial education transcends borders. At the end of last year, the Financial Education Competence Framework was launched through a joint effort by the European Commission and the OECD. It is a conceptual basis upon which to build measures and support for national strategies, the design of programs with tools and materials, and also the evaluation of initiatives\u2014all to improve financial education. Our authorities have shown interest in working along these lines in the coming years. <\/p>\n

In convergence with financial education is digital training. For the IMF, digitalization is the main tool for promoting social inclusion and driving economic development, diversity, and sustainability in less developed countries. <\/p>\n

In other countries, people do not usually think about the advantages of digitalization because we have already internalized them and benefit from them in our daily lives. Rather, the current limits of digitalization have been accepted: insufficient connection and, in some cases, limited digital training\u2014two aspects that the authorities have committed to improving and that Europe wants to resolve. For this reason, more than 20% of European funds will be dedicated to the digitalization of the economy and society, without losing sight of the fact that the objective is to unite and not separate. <\/p>\n

The existence of a digital divide is evident in countries like Spain and goes beyond the age or socio-cultural characteristics of individuals.<\/p>\n

The key to bridging that gap lies in each person having the opportunity to adapt to digitalization at their own pace, so that it serves as a facilitating tool and never a barrier to access, improving their quality of life. Digitalization must be considered as a complement to and improvement of accessibility to private and public products and services, and not as an element of exclusion. <\/p>\n

Financial education and digitalization are not separate frameworks. Financial training is a perfect complement to digitalization because it favors a thoughtful decision-making process, an attitude very different from the impulsive tendency that the internet can sometimes induce. <\/p>\n

A very recent example of this need for reflection and prudence in personal finance management can be found in the rise of cryptocurrencies and the risks they entail.<\/p>\n

All financial assets carry a high risk, and it is essential to know and understand them before making a decision.<\/p>\n

We know there is a long way to go to improve. But we also know that there is strength in unity. For example, banks have recently created a platform that brings together all the sector’s efforts to improve financial education and digital training in society. In this way, we join the collective effort made by the authorities to help train people. <\/p>\n

In the banking sector, we are convinced that the most valuable asset of our time is knowledge. Generating it together and sharing it with everyone is the best way to make it grow. <\/p>\n
