We all benefit from digital innovation. It has changed our way of life and even our way of thinking. For the IMF, digitalization is the main tool to promote social inclusion and drive economic development, diversity, and sustainability. However, too often we are not aware of the risks it entails. Or we simply think it is something that affects others. A fallacy that the numbers dismantle. <\/p>\n

Cybercrime increased by 25.5% last year and now accounts for 19.1% of the total, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior. 90.7% are computer fraud cases, with an increase of 27%. According to a CIS survey, 47.4% of the Spanish population has suffered fraud or threats of fraud. And 60% admit they have little or no knowledge of cybersecurity. These figures are too telling to ignore. Because cybersecurity has become an issue that affects us all on a global scale. <\/p>\n

In the financial sector, commitment to digital security is an essential pillar of its activity. Therefore, it spares no human or financial resources to ensure maximum security of its systems and platforms with the ultimate goal of protecting its clients’ data and money. <\/p>\n

In addition, it devotes enormous efforts to improving financial education and digital skills in society. A good example was the creation two years ago of the Aula Financiera y Digital platform, promoted by AEB, CECA, and Unacc, which brings together all the sector’s training initiatives in an accessible and attractive way for all users. This year we have added a specific web space on cybersecurity, with practical advice to avoid becoming a victim of cybercriminals. Each of us must take measures. <\/p>\n

Cybersecurity is everyone’s task. Banks have no control over what happens outside their scope; they cannot interfere in private communications or in their clients’ devices, the weakest link in the chain and where criminals focus most. According to Incibe, last year 83,517 cybersecurity incidents affecting citizens were managed, a substantial part of which involved the leaking of personal data through deception such as identity theft via phishing. Prevention and training are essential. <\/p>\n

In this context, the ‘Protect Yourself, Preventing Fraud Is in Your Hands’ campaign has been launched by the four financial sector associations (AEB, CECA, Unacc, and ASNEF) together with Incibe, the Civil Guard, and the National Police with the aim of strengthening people’s digital security. Public-private collaboration, also at an international level, is essential to fight against a widespread risk. <\/p>\n

The awareness and information initiative is based on videos and audio with basic precautions and practical advice focused on preventing deception. It is true that immediacy is one of the consequences of digitalization, but we can always control impulsiveness in decision-making. <\/p>\n

The campaign is based on four simple slogans, which ultimately represent citizens’ weakness against cybercriminals:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Passwords, like your keys, only for you<\/li>\n
  2. Better to hang up than to regret<\/li>\n
  3. Think before you click<\/li>\n
  4. When faced with urgency, exercise caution<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Personal information is valuable and can be exploited by criminals. In addition, scammers may try to deceive us using information obtained from the internet or from a data breach. You must think before responding to any call or communication. And be aware that pressure techniques, such as urgency or fear, are often used, urging us to take hasty actions. <\/p>\n

    Combating cybercrime has become one of the main priorities for everyone, whether we are individuals or work in companies, institutions, or governments. And we all have the responsibility to prevent and combat it: companies and authorities must invest in protection and strengthen collaboration among all parties involved; citizens must also assume responsibility for protecting our own data and act with caution. Not recognizing that we are all potentially threatened makes it easy for criminals. <\/p>\n
