The first perception we have of a crisis is danger. Sometimes this comes with intense pain, as we are experiencing in the current pandemic. However, it can also represent an opportunity for change, supported by a trend that already existed. This is the case with the digital transformation of society, which has accelerated exponentially during lockdown\u2014one of the few positive things this terrible health crisis has brought us. And our elderly, the most vulnerable to COVID-19, are among its main beneficiaries. <\/p>\n

Many have discovered that practically everything can be done online. Having a doctor’s appointment, ordering medicine, dealing with the administration, shopping, accessing private services and, above all, staying informed. The fundamental thing during the worst moments of lockdown is that it has served us all as a means of communication. No matter how far apart we are, we can talk and see each other 24 hours a day. Fighting loneliness and social exclusion has been a priority during the state of emergency. But for older people living in remote and increasingly depopulated rural areas, it is always a priority. <\/p>\n

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) speaks of the “inclusive revolution” as the goal to pursue in order to achieve a more digital society. For this supranational institution, digitalization brings greater economic growth and prosperity. In a period as difficult as the current one, it has facilitated the implementation of essential government support for families and businesses. In many countries, advancing toward the desired digitalization faces the technological obstacle of limited infrastructure. However, in Spain, all studies show that the main deficiency is the training of society, from human technical capital to the digital literacy of the users themselves. Authorities and other economic agents must do everything possible to overcome this obstacle. No one should be left out of the benefits of digitalization. And age should not be an impediment to progress, just as it should not be for any other important facet of life. <\/p>\n

The AEB Foundation, of the Spanish Banking Association, and the Cibervoluntarios Foundation have launched the third edition of Expertclick, their free digital training program for people over 55 residing in rural areas throughout Spain. The main difference compared to the two previous programs is that on this occasion the training will be entirely online, with a virtual classroom of a maximum of twelve students to avoid any risk of contagion. City councils and social entities representing the elderly can submit their application to participate in this project on the website www.expertclick.org<\/a>. The ultimate goal of the program is for them to make the most of digitalization and thereby improve their quality of life. <\/p>\n

The 100 workshops starting now until the end of the year consist of three sessions of one and a half hours each, in which, through mobile phones or tablets, participants will be taught from a practical perspective how to navigate the internet with confidence and security. These are the three characteristics that define the initiative. It is a personalized and supported training that goes beyond the sessions, with a telephone support channel that will remain active until one month after the program ends. <\/p>\n

COVID-19 has changed our way of living and working. It is also changing the way companies produce and interact with customers. It remains to be seen how many of these changes are permanent. What is certain is that digital technology, which was already part of our lives before the crisis, is now essential. Let us discover all the possibilities it offers to make our lives easier, especially in contexts as complex as the current one. <\/p>\n
