José María Roldán, Chairman of the AEB and its foundation, will present the Federico Prades Award on October 15 to Verónica Frisancho, Senior Economist at the Inter-American Development Bank, for her research on financial education taught in schools and its impact on the student environment.

Download the program

In the second edition of this award for young economists, which will be broadcast online, the winner will present her work on the short- and long-term effects of financial education on students, their parents, and teachers, following an introduction by the jury president, Gonzalo Solana, on the contribution of her research.

A debate will then be opened on the challenges of financial education in times of uncertainty like the present, with Laura Hospido, Economist in the Microeconomic Studies Division at the Bank of Spain; Ildefonso Méndez, Professor at the University of Murcia and Director of the Center for Studies in Non-Cognitive Skills and Economic Evaluation; and Paula Papp, Director of Financial Services at Frontier Economics. The discussion will be moderated by Juan Carlos Delrieu, Director of Strategic Planning and Sustainability at the AEB.

Sign up for the webinar here

The Federico Prades Award, endowed with 20,000 euros, recognizes the work of the former economic advisor to the AEB for more than 20 years, during which he decisively contributed to understanding our economy, proposing policies to improve economic and social development, and anticipating the framework in which Spanish financial institutions should develop their business models.

With this award, the AEB aims to support young economists in researching and presenting ideas that stimulate debate and the search for solutions to the challenges facing the financial system, just as Federico Prades did throughout his professional career.

The AEB and its Foundation, in collaboration with the Junior Achievement Foundation, held the first innovation and financial education camp during European Money Week 2017. This initiative involved 70 secondary school students from five schools in Madrid, who had the opportunity to learn how to develop a mobile application prototype using the design thinking method. The camp aimed to help young people develop responsible financial skills and learn to manage their finances.

The students attended different workshops and were assisted throughout the day by 11 banking and IT volunteers, who acted as mentors for each team.

The best applications were presented on March 28 at the AEB headquarters in Torre Espacio, where the students presented their work to a jury composed of banking and technology executives. The six finalist applications facilitated saving and expense control for young people through savings goals, parental control, completing tasks in exchange for an allowance, or savings challenges with their friends.

In 2016, the Spanish Banking Association, together with the AEB Foundation, held the first TEDx event as part of European Money Week, which is organised annually by the European Banking Federation. The event, under the theme “Rebooting Financial Education“, featured four participants (a banking volunteer, a high school student, a teacher, and entrepreneur Carlos Barrabés) who shared their experience with financial education and highlighted the need to introduce it into the school curriculum.

AEB worked with Deusto Business School and Junior Achievement to organise this event, held at the Madrid Hub, which was attended by representatives from the banking world, education and the public sector, as well as students from the Menesianos School in Madrid.

With the aim of reaching a broader audience through its initiatives, the AEB and its Foundation, in collaboration with CUNEF, launched It sounds vaguely familiar to me, a digital dictionary in which three well-known TV and theatre personalities explained up to nine financial concepts, such as the investment fund; debit and credit cards; or the risk premium, among others, in clear, engaging language.

This initiative reached more than 720,000 people through social media (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter).

It sounds vaguely familiar to me has been a success, thanks to the strong response from users. For this reason, the AEB plans to increase the number of concepts in this financial dictionary.
